The Artisans
Mayan women believe that weaving was taught by the goddess
Ixchel to the first women since the beginning of time.
Since then, mothers have taught their daughters
from generation to generation.
This type of weaving has been indigenous women's economic contribution to their household and to their community. In addition, it has a religious importance to mayan culture.
Weaving is used to express their identity, women show their
respect to their community by weaving and wearing this unique textiles.
One piece may take several months to weave, depending
on the complexity of the design, that is why they have great
value amongst society. They represent history, hard work
and makes them proud of their heritage.
